Gull Lake: Southwest Michigan’s Crystal Waters

Nestled in the heart of Southwest Michigan, near the charming town of Richland, Gull Lake is a breathtaking expanse of water and a true natural treasure. Drawing visitors, boaters, and nature lovers from near and far, this exceptionally large, deep, and clear lake offers a vibrant mix of recreational activities and stunning scenery. Whether you are looking for an action-packed weekend on the water or a tranquil escape into nature’s embrace, Gull Lake has it all.

A Lake of Impressive Proportions

Formed by glaciers over 14,000 years ago, Gull Lake spans an impressive 2,050 acres, stretching approximately 5 miles long and 1 mile wide. Its depth is just as remarkable, plummeting to a maximum of 110 feet, with an average depth around 40 feet. These deep, spring-fed waters contribute to the lake’s unparalleled clarity—with visibility often reaching depths of 25 to 40 feet in the spring. This earns Gull Lake its reputation for crystal-clear, emerald-aqua waters that look absolutely stunning in aerial photos (be sure to check out the gallery on our Facebook page and here on gulllakelive.com!).

Named for its Coastal Visitors

Despite being an inland gem, Gull Lake boasts a unique coastal feel. Its name originates from the large flocks of seagulls that occasionally migrate inland from Lake Michigan. These graceful birds add to the lake’s charm and give the area a true “Great Lakes” atmosphere right in the heart of the countryside.

Gull Island: A Unique Lakeside Community

Adding to the lake’s allure is Gull Island, a captivating islet in the south end. Interestingly, this island used to be a peninsula before a pioneer built the original dam in 1833, raising the water level and cutting it off from the mainland! Today, it is an exclusive, secluded haven accessible only by boat in the summer—or by venturing across the ice in the winter. It boasts a tight-knit community of residents who share unparalleled, 360-degree access to the lake’s beauty.

A Playground for Water (and Ice) Enthusiasts

Gull Lake is a premier haven for water enthusiasts of all kinds.

Conveniently Located for Easy Access

Gull Lake is highly accessible, making it a favorite getaway for both locals and out-of-staters. It is located just 11 miles northeast of downtown Kalamazoo (home to Western Michigan University) and 13 miles northwest of Battle Creek (the Cereal City). If you are traveling from Grand Rapids, the lake is an easy 45-minute drive south.

Geographically Diverse and Rich in Ecosystems

The majority of the lake lies within Kalamazoo County, with its northern tip extending into Barry County. It’s shared by Ross, Richland, and Prairieville townships. Primarily fed by natural springs and creeks—including the trout-filled Prairieville Creek on the north end—the lake supports a healthy, thriving ecosystem. The water level is regulated by a dam on the south end, maintained by the Gull Lake Quality Organization, which lowers the water level by a few inches each winter to protect the beautiful shoreline from ice damage.

A Hub of Businesses, Dining, and Recreation

Gull Lake and its surrounding shores boast an incredible array of businesses, historic sites, and recreational hotspots:
